A few months back, Melina and I really got to work on putting deer fence around her garden plots. I handled the simple stuff: setting the posts and helping string the 6 foot chicken wire. We both had a suspicion, however, that deer that were properly motivated (by water and juicy veggies and fruits) could and would jump the wire. So Melina decided to add a "confusion" fence, made up of 6 foot bamboo poles inserted at various angles in the chicken wire that would make the deer wonder about the judiciousness of leaping. But she couldn't help but make these additions a scuptural/artiistic enterprise, and the result is beautiful. It wasn't until I saw them in the afternoon light that I was reminded of an old painting of mine from the 60's that seemed echo the lines formed by the bamboo poles.
